Diego Aboal is the Director of the Center for Economic Research (CINVE, Uruguay). He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Essex (UK) and two Master in Economics, one from the London School of Economics (UK) and the other from Universidad de la República (Uruguay). He is a Professor at Universidad ORT Uruguay and at Universidad de la República. In 2007-2008 he was a temporary Lecturer of Econometrics in the Master in Finance of the University of Cambridge (UK). His main areas of research are: the Economy of Science, Technology and Innovation, Political Economy and Economics of Crime and Violence.

He has been an advisor to the Minister of Economy and Finance of Uruguay in the years 2001-2002. He has participated in several research projects in Latin America and the Caribbean. In one of the most recent, on innovation in services, he was the co-coordinator of 8 research teams from different countries and with a budget in dollars of over 400k under his responsibility. He has been a consultant for several institutions: IDB, IDRC, DFID, ILO, governments of various countries in LAC. His articles have been accepted for publication in the following academic journals: Industrial and Corporate Change, Economics of Innovation and New Technology, World Development, Journal of Development Studies, Small Business Economics, Emerging Markets Finance and Trade, European Journal on Criminal Policy and Research, CEPAL Review.
